Recently, we carried out an unusual mechanical test for a renowned manufacturer of flooring systems. The objective was to evaluate the behaviour of a floorboard installed on a dry fill subfloor under repeated loading simulating walking loads.
Test procedure developed according to specific requirements
As no standardized test method exists for this type of assessment, the test procedure was developed according to the customer’s specific requirements and performed as a non-accredited test.
The project also involved the design and manufacture of a dedicated testing equipment in our laboratory’s own workshop. During the test, a pneumatic actuator repeatedly applied a load of up to 1500 N to a horizontally mounted floor specimen, with each cycle simulating the walking load of a person weighing approximately 150 kg. In total, 5,000 loading cycles were completed over a three-day testing period.
Measurement and evaluation
Using calibrated displacement gauges, we continuously monitored floor deflection at several measurement points and recorded both instantaneous and permanent deformation. The results were subsequently processed and delivered to the customer.
An individual approach to technical challenges
Projects like this demonstrate that, in addition to standard testing services, we are able to address specific technical challenges that require an individual approach. It is in situations like these that the experience, expertise and flexibility of our team truly come into play.
We are pleased that, in this case as well, our technician Jaroslav Šoltis and head of the testing laboratory Marek Gorlický were able to develop a solution that met the customer’s expectations.
